On Thursday, the majority of members of the European Parliament called for developing a strategy to confront the “infiltration” of extremist groups and the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood, while other representatives considered that part of the non-binding resolution bears features of “Islamophobia.”
Parliament approved the decision submitted by the center-right European People’s Party bloc, with a majority of 381 votes in favor, compared to 167 votes in opposition, with 15 members abstaining from voting, during a plenary session at its headquarters in the French city of Strasbourg.
The blocs of the radical left, the Greens, the Socialists, and the Democrats had previously announced their non-support for the non-binding text, considering that part of it bears features of “Islamophobia.”
The European People’s Party bloc said that one of the main goals of the resolution is to demand tracking the path of European funds paid to extremist entities and stopping any funding for them.
The decision also calls for the final exclusion of Femiso, the Forum of European Organizations for Muslim Youth and Students, from European institutions, an organization considered close to the Brotherhood.
“Islamic penetration does not always start with the noise of weapons, but rather with a smile, a carefully arranged tie, and human rights language distorted out of context,” Céline Aymar, the rapporteur of the draft resolution, said during a discussion on Wednesday.
A report on political Islam published in France in May 2025 warned of “al-Qaeda infiltration” attempts, that is, at the local and collective levels, led by the Brotherhood.
This issue is being embraced by parties from the right and extreme right as part of the campaign for the 2027 presidential elections.
Magnus Brunner, European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, stated during a discussion that took place on Wednesday that “the terrorist threat related to extremism in Europe has been linked in recent years to extremist parties and ideas, including movements such as the Muslim Brotherhood.”
The Austrian official also indicated that although the Commission takes these concerns “seriously,” member states’ opinions differ regarding the role of the Brotherhood organization.
The French representative in the European Parliament for the Green Party, Melissa Camara, strongly criticized the inclusion of this issue on the agenda at the initiative of “the right and the extreme right,” considering it a step that served only one goal, which is “providing these political movements with the opportunity to express their terrorism against Islam and their hatred of foreigners.”
