Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the AU and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Ambassador Mohammed Arrouchi.
Marrakech – Morocco took the lead in presenting the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council’s (PSC) position on youth, peace, and security on Thursday during the 11th Joint Informal Seminar between the African Union body and the United Nations Security Council in New York.
Speaking as the principal representative of the African Union council on the subject, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the AU and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Ambassador Mohammed Arrouchi, emphasized the increasingly important role of young Africans in preventing and resolving conflicts.
The Moroccan diplomat stressed the contributions of young people to peacebuilding, democratic governance, mediation, and social cohesion, arguing that their involvement has become increasingly important as the continent confronts evolving security threats.
Giving young Africans a greater voice in peace processes
Arrouchi called for more meaningful youth participation in peace negotiations and preventive diplomacy, emphasizing the need to move beyond recognizing young people’s potential toward ensuring their effective involvement in decision-making.
He advocated greater representation of young people in dialogue mechanisms and peacebuilding initiatives at both national and regional levels, particularly in efforts aimed at preventing conflicts and strengthening social cohesion.
The ambassador also drew attention to the relationship between peace, economic opportunity, and sustainable development, maintaining that youth empowerment should form an integral part of the continent’s broader security agenda.
In this regard, he pointed to the importance of creating opportunities for young Africans in entrepreneurship, innovation, trade, energy, and emerging technologies.
His remarks presented economic inclusion not merely as a development objective, but as an important dimension of efforts to promote lasting peace and stability.
Climate change, disinformation, and emerging security threats
Beyond traditional conflict prevention, Arrouchi urged greater youth involvement in responding to emerging challenges that increasingly shape Africa’s peace and security landscape.
He specifically identified climate change, disinformation, and the responsible use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence as areas requiring greater attention.
The ambassador highlighted the importance of integrating young people into efforts to address these challenges, underlining their potential contribution to developing responses to an increasingly complex security environment.
Morocco’s intervention at the joint seminar placed youth participation, economic empowerment, and technological responsibility at the center of discussions between the African Union Peace and Security Council and the UN Security Council.
