LEBANON, Ohio (WXIX) – A crash that left an 11-year-old girl seriously injured has sparked conversation about signage at the Lebanon intersection where she was hit, according to the city and the girl’s mother.
Lebanon Mayor Mark Messer responded to a request for comment, saying staff has asked TEC Engineering to perform a multi-way stop sign warrant analysis at the intersection of Miller Road and Revere’s Run Road.
Messer said staff has not recommended installing an unprotected pedestrian crossing at the intersection given the three-lane configuration and 35 mph speed limit. He said if the warrant analysis shows a multi-way stop meets one of the criteria, staff would recommend installing new stop signs on Miller Road at the intersection. If not, staff will evaluate further options.
Carissa Tuttle said her daughter, Ava Daniels, was hit while crossing the road on her scooter.
“I know they’ve recently put in a crosswalk kind of closer to the junior high, but I do think there should be another one, maybe even two, down farther towards Hart Road,” Tuttle said.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says the crash happened just after 4 p.m. Tuesday near Miller Road and Revere’s Run Road. A 33-year-old was driving east on Miller Road in a Ford Expedition, according to troopers.
Ava was headed south on her scooter, crossing the road, when she was hit. She was not wearing a helmet.
Tuttle said Ava and a friend had asked to get snacks after school, with Ava riding her scooter.
“And probably about 5 minutes later her friend came rushing upstairs hysterically crying, letting me know that she got hit by the car,” Tuttle said.
Paramedics took Ava to Warren County Airport, then flew her to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital with serious injuries.
“I couldn’t get to her. The paramedics were doing their job and all that, but I couldn’t make sure she was okay. I couldn’t be on the helicopter or anything,” Tuttle said.
Tuttle said Ava had surgery to remove a kidney, tore her ACL, and has a liver laceration and a fractured spine.
“She’s definitely the sassy one of the six. She likes to make sure her hair is done, her makeup, her skincare, has a whole bunch of friends, so social. It’s actually the hardest part seeing her go from that to she’s just laying in a hospital bed sleeping all day,” Tuttle said.
A GoFundMe for Ava has been set up.
