China has more than 50 naval and other official vessels operating across a vast stretch of waters from southern Japan to Taiwan and off the Philippines, a senior Taiwanese official said, describing the threat as “obvious.”
“We’re staying vigilant about their activities,” said Joseph Wu, secretary-general of Taiwan’s National Security Council. “The simultaneous threat to Taiwan, Japan and the Philippines is obvious, Reuters reported.
Wu’s remarks on Wednesday were accompanied by a map he posted on X showing the locations of 53 Chinese vessels, including 34 naval warships and the aircraft carrier Liaoning.

According to the map, the carrier and its accompanying battle group were positioned east of the Philippines. Other Chinese naval formations were operating off Taiwan’s eastern and southeastern coasts, while three were located off southern Japan.
Wu published a similar map on X in May.
On Wednesday, Japan’s Defense Ministry said it had tracked three Chinese warships and a Coast Guard vessel the previous day as they passed through the narrow Osumi Strait off Kyushu island and entered the Pacific Ocean.
Earlier this month, China’s Defense Ministry said the Liaoning was conducting a routine training exercise that was not directed at any specific country.
China’s relations with both Japan and the Philippines have deteriorated in recent months. Beijing has expressed displeasure over Japanese support for Taiwan while becoming embroiled in an increasingly bitter confrontation with Manila in the South China Sea.
“We are not happy to see any attempt to project deterrence that could undermine peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region,” Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Koo told reporters at parliament in Taipei on Thursday.
A senior Taiwanese security official briefed on the matter said one key issue to monitor was whether the Liaoning carrier group would continue moving north toward Japan after completing its drills in the Philippine Sea.
“If it keeps moving north, that would suggest a stronger intent to put pressure on Japan’s defence posture,” the official said.
