On World Kobanê Day, the MSD pays tribute to the people of Kobanê and honors its martyrs, expressing deep gratitude to all international forces and nations that stood alongside the city against ISIS.
The Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) released a statement marking World Kobanê Day.
Titled “From Resistance to Political Presence,” the statement reads as follows:
“On November 1, the Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) marks World Kobanê Day, reflecting on its profound historical, humanitarian, and political significance. Today, Kobanê and its people play a pivotal role in shaping Syria’s future. In 2014, the resistance of Kobanê transcended geographic borders. It became a global symbol of human resolve against terrorism and a testament to the defense of freedom, dignity, and diversity.
When Kobanê faced ISIS’s brutal offensive, its people made immense sacrifices to protect their city, identity, and right to live. Their resistance marked a critical turning point in the global fight against terrorism. It sparked widespread international solidarity that went beyond supporting a besieged city. Ultimately, Kobanê represented a global stand against violent extremism and a victory for human dignity, freedom, and self-preservation.
The battle of Kobanê proved that the will of the people and their right to self-defense are a vital shield against projects of exclusion and annihilation. Protecting human life and society is inseparable from preserving history, identity, and the right to self-determination. The significance of Kobanê lay not only in its military triumph, but in demonstrating a community’s ability to transform resilience into a powerful force on the regional and global stage.
Amid deep transformations across Syria, World Kobanê Day carries renewed significance. In 2014, Kobanê embodied the struggle for survival against terrorism. Now, the priority has shifted from protecting existence to securing political representation, and from defending rights to anchoring them within the state structure, institutions, and constitution. The immense sacrifices made by the people of Kobanê must not remain merely a heroic chapter in the history of counterterrorism. Instead, they must serve as the foundation for active political participation, real decision-making power, and a meaningful role in shaping Syria’s future.
From this perspective, Kobanê —which defended its existence and dignity against terrorism—deserves renewed solidarity today that supports its right to participate actively in shaping Syria’s future. The people of Kobanê must have a political role proportionate to their sacrifices and experience. Their resilience must translate into meaningful political and civic participation in state-building, rather than being confined to the history of resistance.
The MSD believes that building a united Syria does not mean erasing local identities or forcing a uniform model. Instead, it requires recognizing national, religious, and cultural diversity, establishing equal citizenship, and providing constitutional guarantees that protect fundamental rights and freedom. A democratic state cannot be built through exclusion or imposed reality; it requires genuine partnership, mutual recognition, and a fair distribution of authority. This empowers local communities to manage their affairs and contribute directly to Syria’s collective future.
In this context, the MSD emphasizes that national issues—foremost among them the Kurdish cause—require a serious political and constitutional approach. Solutions must be built on dialogue, mutual understanding, and full recognition of rights rather than unilateral measures. Current transformations cannot succeed through administrative and security arrangements alone. Success depends on building an inclusive national partnership and establishing binding political, legal, and social guarantees that build trust and deliver lasting stability.
On World Kobanê Day, the MSD pays tribute to the people of Kobanê and honors its martyrs. We express deep gratitude to all international forces and nations that stood alongside the city against ISIS. Honoring this legacy requires more than commemoration. It demands translating these sacrifices into a new political reality where Kobanê’s people are full partners in building a democratic, pluralistic, and decentralized Syria that guarantees dignity, equal citizenship, and protection for all identities.
The international solidarity that enabled Kobanê to defend its existence in 2014 must be renewed today—empowering its people to secure their rightful political presence and help shape the future of Syria.”
