Stanley Workman turned his hobby for knitting into a passion project
A 91-year-old man has proven it is never too late to learn a new skill after taking up knitting and making around 200 hats, including for babies in hospital.
Stanley Workman, from Woodbridge in Suffolk, took up the craft five years ago when his late wife, Jennifer, was gifted knitting looms but showed little interest in them.
What started out as a humble hobby to pass the time turned into a passion project, with the former lorry driver handing them out free of charge.
Many of his head-warming creations have been donated to the St Mary's Shop, which sells products to raise money for St Mary's church in the town.
He joked that he had made one of the hats for himself but "I don't know what I've done with it".
Workman, who has lived in Woodbridge since being moved from Bristol to the town when he was fostered as a young boy, has been a supporter of the church for years.
The father-of-three, who drove lorries for a garden centre for 48 years, also served as the church's warden from 2012 to 2018.
The father-of-three is partial to using a bold colour or three
Workman has also made the hats for premature babies to wear at Ipswich Hospital and gifted 30 to people in war-torn Ukraine.
Despite spending years knitting hundreds of hats, Workman said he had yet to spot one of his own creations in the wild.
"When I used to walk around the river, I'd see somebody wearing a hat and think, 'Is that mine?', but no, I've never seen anyone wearing one of my hats."
