President Donald Trump ordered the Justice Department to investigate what he called criminal threats by Democratic leaders against administration officials, Republican donors and supporters, accusing them of using impeachment or imprisonment to intimidate political opponents.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused Democrats of threatening Attorney General Todd Blanche and others with punishment despite what he said was a lack of wrongdoing. The Democrats have been swarming around Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth with talk of impeachment as he will be expected to face the ‘new’ Democratic Congress to ask for more funding for the war and will face his political opponents who are salivating at the opportunity in January.
"This is extortion at the highest level, and they should be held accountable for this," Trump wrote.
The president also accused Democrats of threatening Republican donors with imprisonment because of their political affiliations, describing the alleged conduct as "Weaponization and Lawfare at another level."
"By copy of this statement, I am ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!" Trump wrote.
Trump’s directive comes days after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
