The New York state Legislature on Monday passed a ninth state budget extender — now more than a month past the budget’s deadline — which was signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The extender runs through Wednesday and funds state operations.
The budget was due April 1.
Hochul told reporters on Friday she is hopeful a budget framework deal could come this week.
The governor and legislative leaders have said progress has been made on Hochul’s proposal to reform the state’s car insurance laws in an effort to lower rates, dial back the 2019 climate law, school aid and to nail down details around her proposed tax on luxury second homes worth $5 million or more.
There have been frustrations among some lawmakers about the slow process. If Hochul signs budget bills later than Saturday, it will be the latest state budget since 2010.
State Assembly Minority Leader Ed Ra on Monday criticized the budget tardiness in references from the franchise "Star Wars," as Monday is unofficially known as "May the 4th Be With You" Day.
"The governor indicated that this ‘should be a very significant week.’ But whether or not it’s an attempt at a Jedi mind trick, there’s little evidence that inspires A New Hope," Ra said in a statement. "More than a month after the April 1 deadline, we’ve heard enough hints, estimates and innuendoes. New Yorkers expect and deserve spending details and actual budget bills. They say the greatest teacher, failure is. But Albany Democrats have clearly learned nothing from their own dysfunction that for years has plagued this process.”
