The CJP protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar has escalated into a direct confrontation between the police and the opposition. AAP Convener Arvind Kejriwal was detained outside his Lodhi Estate residence while trying to march towards Jantar Mantar. Saurabh Bharadwaj was detained alongside him, while Sanjay Singh, Durgesh Pathak and Gopal Rai were also held. TMC leader Mamata Banerjee was detained near South Avenue after staging a sit-in with party leaders Derek O’Brien, Dola Sen and Pratima Mondal. In Kerala, former chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby, Brinda Karat, M.V. Govindan, P.K. Sreemathy and Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas were taken into custody. Kejriwal called the situation worse than the Emergency. Police defended the action as preventive measures against an unauthorised protest and a possible law-and-order crisis.
