Spain and the United States meet for the first time in four years in a heavyweight double header, with both camps treating it as preparation for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil, according to Superdeporte.
The opening game is on Saturday at Audi Field, home of Washington Spirit, kicking off at 14.30 local time, 20:30 in peninsular Spain.
The second follows three days later in Chester, at the Philadelphia Union stadium, starting at 19.00 local, which is 1.00 in Spain on Wednesday 14 October.
Their last meeting was on 11 October 2022 at El Sadar, where Spain won 2-0 through Laia Codina and Esther González. It was Spain’s first victory over the USA after four matches.
Irene Paredes said the competitive picture has shifted in recent years and Spain want to go toe to toe. She spoke before the squad flew to Washington.
Head coach Sonia Bermúdez highlighted progress in clubs and regional federations and the high standard in youth teams. She expects the USA’s physical, transition-focused style and believes these tests will aid World Cup preparation.
The captain added that Spain are approaching the trip as if the tournament began now, seeking full readiness. Spain top the FIFA rankings with the USA second, are world champions while the Americans hold the Olympic title, and they have beaten the USA only once.
