TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Arrmanatha Nasir stated that he had contacted Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan to explain the measures the Indonesian government is taking to tackle forest and land fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan.
This communication with the Malaysian Foreign Minister was conducted to follow up on a telephone conversation held this week between President Prabowo Subianto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“Yes, we have communicated with [Malaysia]; I have spoken with the Malaysian Foreign Minister, and we have explained the steps Indonesia has taken—such as deploying over 60,000 personnel and utilizing 48 helicopters and aircraft for water bombing and weather modification operations,” Arrmanatha said in response to reporters’ questions at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta, on Saturday, October 10, 2026.
Arrmanatha—familiarly known as Tata—further noted that forest and land fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan remain a challenge for Indonesia.
“We hope the fires will soon subside, as rain is forecast,” he said.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on Thursday (October 8) that he had contacted President Prabowo, and the two discussed the fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra, the haze from which has affected regions in Malaysia and Singapore.
“The haze issue is indeed concerning; I have contacted President Prabowo, and he has agreed to take the necessary measures,” Prime Minister Anwar said.
He reiterated Malaysia’s readiness to assist Indonesia in tackling the fires and the resulting haze.
“We stated several weeks ago that we are ready to provide any form of cooperation. I know this is a cause for concern and impacts public health,” he said. Anwar also stated that he had instructed the Malaysian Foreign Minister to contact the ASEAN Secretariat to convene a meeting of ASEAN environment ministers specifically to discuss addressing the haze.
