United Nations (TDI): Pakistan has urged the United States and Iran to honour their commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and return to negotiations, warning that escalating tensions over Tehran’s nuclear program threaten regional and international peace and security.
Addressing a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing on Iran and nuclear non-proliferation on Tuesday, Pakistan’s Acting Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, said the situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear file had deteriorated sharply, complicating efforts to address the issue through the Security Council.
“The ground situation in the past few months has been marked by deep tensions and continued hostilities,” Jadoon said, adding that profound mistrust and differences among council members had also undermined consensus.
He warned that recent developments had once again demonstrated the fragility of the situation and the risk of further escalation, making a diplomatic settlement more urgent than ever.
Pakistan called on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid rhetoric, actions and military postures that could heighten tensions and increase the risk of conflict.
Jadoon highlighted Pakistan’s mediation efforts, describing the Islamabad MoU as evidence that diplomatic engagement could produce progress despite deep differences between Washington and Tehran.

He said Pakistan had continued working to promote de-escalation, secure a ceasefire and create conditions conducive to meaningful negotiations by facilitating dialogue and the exchange of messages between the parties.
“The Islamabad MoU signed in June is a successful manifestation of this approach,” he said, adding that the framework demonstrated the possibility of progress through diplomacy.
The Pakistani envoy thanked the parties involved for their engagement and acknowledged the support of regional and international partners, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Egypt and China.
He expressed hope that the Security Council would overcome its divisions and support efforts to resolve the dispute peacefully.
“We believe that diplomacy can once again deliver results in paving the way for settling contentious issues peacefully,” Jadoon said, stressing that achieving such an outcome would require sustained and careful diplomatic work.
Jadoon urged the Security Council to revive the spirit of cooperative multilateralism and mutual understanding to overcome the current deadlock.
He reiterated Pakistan’s position that outstanding issues concerning Iran’s nuclear program should be resolved through peaceful means, diplomatic engagement and sustained dialogue, in accordance with the rights and obligations of the parties concerned.

Pakistan also stressed that questions of nuclear non-compliance should be addressed through competent technical institutions, particularly the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), rather than becoming subject to political disputes.
“The IAEA must be enabled to carry out its work without any hindrance and within its technical mandate,” Jadoon said. His remarks underscored Islamabad’s position that the nuclear issue requires a negotiated solution that upholds the international non-proliferation regime while safeguarding regional and international peace and security.
