14:10: The exuberance of youth wins out over experience when 20-year-old Bo BASSETT (USA) puts on a comeback for the ages to stun former world champion Abasgadzhi MAGOMEDOV (RUS) 14-13 in a 65kg quarterfinal that will be remembered for years. The 28-year-old Magomedov twice used counter throws — one for 4 points and another for 2 — and a takedown to take a 10-3 lead into the break. Another takedown put Magomedov one point from a victory by technical superiority, but the human dynamo named Bo was not going to go down easy. A pair of counter exposures started his comeback, which he capped with a takedown and 2-point exposure in the final 30 seconds. Whew!
14:10: Down goes world champion Rahman AMOUZAD (IRI)! Vazgen TEVANYAN (ARM) is offered a caution and one point as Amouzad flees the hold in the last 4 seconds. Iran challenges but the caution is upheld, Amouzad falls 3-2
14:05: Abdulmazhid KUDIEV (TJK) takes out SUJEET (IND), 3-3, on criteria at 65kg quarterfinals. Sujeet takes a 3-1 lead over Kudiev and he manages to go-behind Kudiev for takedown but Tajik wrestler reached for Sujeet’s heel to defend and then manage to score a takedown. Kudiev holds his 3-3 criteria lead to win.
14:02: Shamil MAMEDOV (BUL) scores two takedowns in the first period and two stepouts in the second to defeat Taiyrbek ZHUMASHBEK UULU (KGZ) 6-0 and advance to the 65kg semifinals.
13:56: Arash YOSHIDA (JPN) back in the semifinals of the World Championships after a 10-2 win over VICKY (IND). He controls the full bout with stepouts and takedowns before countering a move for a four pointer. Vicky gets two points but Yoshida has no problems seeing off the remaining time.
13:54: The fifth showdown at a major UWW event between 97kg titans Kyle SNYDER (USA) and Abdulrashid SADULAEV (RUS) comes down to stamina. Snyder had it, Sadulaev didn’t, and came away with a nail-biting 4-4 victory on last-point criteria. Sadulaev, who had beaten Snyder in three of their four previous encounters, gains a stepout off a single-leg takedown attempt in the first period. In the second, the Russian receives an activity point. When Sadulaev shoots for a takedown, Snyder clamps down with a front chest wrap—but Sadulaev skillfully twists to throw Snyder off him, then gets behind for a takedown. Snyder’s constant pressure takes a toll on a visibly gassed Sadulaev, and the American gets the stepout that puts him ahead to stay.
13:58: Akhmed TAZHUDINOV (BRN) also shows he is contending with a lack of conditioning as he nearly squanders a nine-point lead before surviving at 97kg with a 12-7 win over Magomedkhan MAGOMEDOV (AZE) in their quarterfinal. Tazhudinov dominates the first period, taking a 5-0 lead, then adds a 4-point throw in the second. But Magomedov doesn’t give up, whittling the lead down to 9-5. But Tazhudinov has just enough in the tank to score again and clinch his place in the semifinals.
13:55: Zbigniew BARANOWSKI (POL) with a tactical masterclass against Givi MATCHARASHVILI (GEO) to win 8-3 and advance to the 97kg semifinals. Matcharashvili led 1-0 before Baranowski hits a takedown and turn to lead 4-1. Matcharashvili scored a takedown to close in 4-3. However, Baranowski dominates the second period with two stepouts and a takedown to win 8-3
13:41: Mariia VYNNYK (UKR) retakes the lead and breaks open her close 59kg quarterfinal with Asian champion and former world bronze medalist Mengyu XIE (CHN), scoring a takedown and adding three gut wrenches in the second period of a 10-3 victory that keeps alive her chances of improving on her 2025 silver medal.
13:40: In a match with four lead changes, Abigail NETTE (USA) comes out with a 7-6 victory over Svetlana LIPATOVA (RUS) to advance to the 59kg semifinals. After a successive trade of takedowns leaves Nette with a 6-4 lead, Lipatova scores a stepout to which a fleeing point is added. Trailing 6-6 on criteria, Lipatova comes desperately close to getting behind for a takedown but time runs out. An unsuccessful challenge adds the final point.
13:40: Altyn SHAGAYEVA (KAZ) gives the hosts Kazakhstan a semifinalist in Women’s Wrestling after beating Jowita WRZESIEN (POL), 5-1, at 59kg. She scores an activity point and two hard-fought takedowns to win the quarterfinals.

13:29: Nataliia KLIVCHUTSKA (UKR) scores a defensive takedown in the final seconds, which is upheld on an unsuccessful challenge, giving her a 4-2 victory over returning silver medalist Ekaterina VERBINA (RUS) and a place in the 55kg semifinals.
13:26: Tuba DEMIR (TUR) overcomes a 3-0 deficit in the second period, putting on a surge to defeat Ahilya SHINDE (IND) 9-6 and advance to the 55kg semifinals. Demir goes ahead with a whizzer counter for 2 and a subsequent exposure that Shinde reverses, leaving the Turk ahead 5-4. Demir appears the clinch the victory with a takedown with :12 left, but the two aren’t done, exchanging 2-point exposures in the final seconds.
13:25: Nagisa HARADA (JPN) takes out world champion Kyong Ryong OH (PRK) with a fall at 55kg. Harada led 1-0 with the activity point but she manages a takedown in the second before getting the fall over Oh
13:24: Anastasia BLAYVAS (GER) goes up 1-0 after Everest LEYDECKER (USA) is put on the activity clock but the latter with a takedown to lead 2-1 at the break. She then works a fall with two minutes remaining to enter the semifinals at 55kg.
13:14: Rahman AMOUZAD (IRI) meets some resistance from Ahmet DUMAN (TUR), but the defending champion is safely into the 65kg quarterfinals with a 9-0 win. A stepout and activity point give Amouzad a 2-0 lead at the break, and he piles up three more stepouts. It looks like he’s going to go out a 5-0 winner, but he hits a 4-point throw with three seconds left.
13:08: Bowen BASSETT (USA) takes less than two minutes to beat Quentin STICKER (FRA), 12-0. He hits a double and gets four before the two continue the scramble and Bassett leads 8-0. He then bodylocks Sticker and throws for four for a 12-0 win
13:06: Abasgadzhi MAGOMEDOV (RUS), a former world and European champion at 61kg, breezes into the 65kg quarterfinals with a 10-0 win over Stefan COMAN (ROU). In the second period, he uses a duck under for takedown for two points before holding that lead for the win. He will wrestle Abdulmazhid KUDIEV (TJK) who led 9-2 before Sujeet beat him 10-9 in the Asian Games final almost a month ago.
12:58: Taiyrbek ZHUMASHBEK UULU (KGZ), a 2023 world bronze medalist and two-time Asian champion at 61kg, chalks up two takedowns in the first period and a 4-pointer in the second to defeat Mashrabjon UZAKOV (UZB) 9-1 and advance to the 65kg quarterfinals.
12:55: Shamil MAMEDOV (BUL) is made to work hard for his win against Agustin DESTRIBATS (ARG) but he keeps control of the bout to win 7-3 and reach the quarterfinals at 65kg

Abdulrashid SADULAEV (RUS) advances to a mouth-watering quarterfinal with longtime nemesis Kyle SNYDER (USA), scoring nine points in the second period of a 10-1 win over Batyrbek TSAKULOV (SVK). Limited to an activity point in the first period, Sadulaev perfectly times his attacks to score a pair of takedowns. The second one comes as the activity clock runs out on Tsakulov, and Sadulaev adds a gut wrench to make it 8-0. An attack by Tsakulov results in a stepout, but Sadulaev fends off a second one for a late go-behind takedown.

Yazdani takes time but manages a takedown to take a 2-2 criteria lead in the second period. He then underhooks Yoshida for a stepout to make it 3-2. Yoshida almost gets Yazdani to stepout but underhook counter from Yazdani for a takedown and his lead swells to 5-2. Yoshida hits a single leg attack which Yazdani tries to counter with a chest wrap but eventually gives up a takedown as Yoshida closes in with 5-4 with under a minute left. A second left and Yoshida gets a takedown to win 6-5 to win. Iran challenges but the takedown is confirmed with 0.1 remaining. Lost challenge makes it 7-5

Vynnyk fails to beat the activity clock, but completes a single-leg takedown to take a 2-1 lead in the first period. In the second period, she picks up a takedown and two stepouts before surrendering a stepout to safely advance.
12:08: Kyong Ryong OH (PRK) begins defense of her 55kg title with a 10-0 wipeout of Namuuntsetseg TSOGT OCHIR (MGL). Oh gets the takedown, then twists Tsogt Ochir this way and that to pile up the points and finish her off in 2:03.
12:04: Ekaterina VERBINA (RUS), aiming to improve on the silver medal she won last year at 55kg, breaks open a close match with a pair of 4-point headlock throws, sparking a wild last minute in which she holds on for a 14-9 victory over Jingjing LI (CHN) at 55kg. After the second throw gave Verbina a 12-3 lead, Li responded with six unanswered points before Verbina reversed to the back to seal the victory.
11:45: Young dynamo Bo BASSETT (USA) gets his senior world debut at 65kg off to an impressive start with a first-period fall over Iranian-born Peiman BIABANI (CAN). Bassett, the world U20 champion coming off a disappointing quarterfinal loss at the recent World U23 Championships in Las Vegas, opens with a stepout, then gets in on double that the Beibani, a 2019 Asian bronze medalist, tries to counter lift. But Bassett tips him backward for a 2-point exposure, then moves up to the head and secures the fall in 1:14.
11:42: Rashid BABAZADE (AZE) fumbles a 6-0 lead in the last 30 seconds as Taiyrbek ZHUMASHBEK UULU (KGZ) scores a takedown and then uses front headlock to score 6 points. Tanabe goes ahead 3-0 with a takedown 16 seconds into the second period. But Duman gains a takedown to cut the gap, then forces Tanabe out to take the lead. Like a number of Japanese wrestlers in Astana, Tanabe, who failed to medal at 63kg in Greco in an attempt at the two-style double, was competing in freestyle only because the national champion opted to appear only in the recent Asian Games—in his case, Olympic champion Kotaro KIYOOKA (JPN).
11:34: Abasgadzhi MAGOMEDOV (RUS) brings out a huge arm drag and then arm traps Nika ZAKASHVILI (GEO) for four turns to win 10-0 in 48 seconds. A lost challenge from Georgia adds one more point to his score as he advances at 65kg
11:32: Defending champion and Paris Olympics silver medalist Rahman AMOUZAD (IRI) finally keeps a grip on the slippery Ayub MUSAEV (BEL) and posts a 13-2 win in their opening match at 65kg. After another one, he gut-wrenches twice to end the match with 47 seconds to spare.
11:30: Shamil MAMEDOV (BUL) opens up with an 11-0 technical superiority over Nico MEGERLE (GER) at 65kg. He scores a takedown and turn during Megerle’s activity time to lead 5-0. A takedown more and he makes it 7-0 at the break. Two crafty moves and Mamedov finishes the match
11:28: Magomedkhan MAGOMEDOV (AZE) gets into action after giving up an activity point but catches Aliaksandr HUSHTYN (BLR) in a lace to go up 10-1. 11:12: Three-time world champion and three-time Olympic medalist Hassan YAZDANI (IRI) starts his world debut at 97kg in explosive style, storming to an 11-0 victory over Pureun KIM (KOR). Yazdani, who has an Olympic gold at 74kg and two silvers at 86kg, uses his lethal underhooks for a stepout just seconds into the match. He muscles Kim down for a takedown and adds an exposure, then lifts him up by leg and dumps him for 4. A takedown and the match is over at 1:40. Next up for Yazdani is a clash with Asian champion and returning world bronze medalist Arash YOSHIDA (JPN).
11:10: European Championships silver medalist Batyrbek TSAKULOV (SVK) controls his opening bout against Gennadij CUDINOVIC (GER) and wins 5-0. He gets a rematch with Abdulrashid SADULAEV (RUS) at 97kg.
11:08: Double Olympic champion Abdulrashid SADULAEV (RUS), pursuing a seventh world gold local favorite, takes on former world champion Rizabek AITMUKHAN (KAZ) in one of many featured bouts to come in this session. Aitmukhan gets the first point when a Sadulaev’s counter front body roll at the edge is nullified on challenge and Aitmukhan is awarded a stepout. Sadulaev gets in on a double leg, gets behind and, from standing position, rolls Aitmukhan for a 4-point takedown. In the second period, Aitmukhan goes on the attack but can’t break through against the Russian bear, who wins 4-1. Sadulaev and longtime rival Kyle SNYDER (USA) are now each one win away from a blockbuster quarterfinal clash.
11:05: Paris Olympics silver medalist and two-time world bronze medalist Givi MATCHARASHVILI (GEO) gives up an early stepout to Thomas BARNS (AUS) in their opening match at 97kg, but then takes control and cruises to a 12-1 victory in 2:41.
