Public outrage has erupted after it was revealed that a medical guidance document delivered to a patient contained the exact wording of an artificial intelligence (AI) prompt that included disrespectful remarks about the patient.
A story has emerged that a document containing an AI prompt with derogatory expressions about patients was directly delivered to a patient, sparking controversy. Screenshot from an online community
On June 19, a user on an online community shared a story about their mother, who visited a pain clinic and was shocked by a document she received.
The user, identified as A, stated, “This is a piece of paper my mother received after going to the pain clinic. The content that the doctor entered into the AI prompt was printed out exactly as is.”
The guidance document disclosed by A contained the phrase: “The patient is a manual laborer with poor intelligence, so explain it in a way that’s easy to understand.”
A said, “I thought it was just a treatment information sheet, but I couldn’t believe my eyes as I read it. The phrase that the doctor inputted as an AI prompt was written at the top of the page, word for word, with nothing changed.” A continued, “It is truly infuriating and heartbreaking to know that patients coming for treatment are being demeaned and categorized like this behind their backs.”
A also expressed, “What makes me feel even worse is that my mother originally had a different clinic she went to, but I recommended this one to her. I feel incredibly sorry and guilty, and my heart is heavy.”
After the story was made public, online commenters voiced strong criticism. One commenter said, “This is grounds for revoking the doctor’s license. The name of the hospital should be revealed. Who does the doctor think they are to look down on people with such contempt?” The commenter added, “If they’re just printing out documents generated by AI without any review, does that mean anyone can be a doctor?”
Another commenter, who identified as a physician, pointed out, “If a patient asks for an easy-to-understand explanation, that should be enough. There’s absolutely no reason to include derogatory, insulting remarks when prompting the AI.” The commenter also advised, “Immediately file a complaint with the hospital, and consider leaving an honest, factual review.” However, some have raised the possibility that the story itself may have been fabricated.
