The Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Vienna hosted an event on Friday to mark the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the People’s Republic of China’s lawful seat in the United Nations (UN), reflecting on China’s contributions and reaffirming its commitment to the UN.
The event was attended by heads of international organizations, including Monica Juma, director-general of the UN Office at Vienna, Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and Gerd Mueller, director general of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Nearly 200 participants, including permanent representatives and diplomats from various countries, as well as scholars from think tanks, attended the event.
Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the UN and other international organizations in Vienna, chaired the event. Li said that the 55 years since the restoration of China’s lawful seat in the UN have witnessed China’s peaceful development and its contributions to the well-being of humanity, the remarkable achievements made by the Chinese people under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, and China’s unwavering commitment to upholding the role of the UN and making increasingly significant contributions to the UN’s cause of peace and development.
China stands ready to work with all parties to leverage Vienna’s unique strengths as a multilateral platform, jointly support, revitalize and strengthen the UN, advance the building of a community with a shared future for humanity, and work together toward a better world, Li said.
During the event, Juma presented Li with a copy of a draft telegram sent by then UN Secretary-General U Thant to the Chinese side in October 1971, informing China of the adoption of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758.
Juma said that the restoration of China’s lawful seat in the UN had significantly enhanced the voice of developing countries and strengthened the UN’s universal representativeness. She added that it was also an important step in upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and realizing the UN’s founding vision.
Grossi described General Assembly Resolution 2758 as a milestone that filled an important gap in the UN system. He said the IAEA stands ready to work closely with China to make greater contributions to the global revival of nuclear energy and the international nuclear non-proliferation regime.
Mueller said China had made tremendous contributions to global development, industrialization and poverty reduction. Noting that this year marks the fifth anniversary of the Global Development Initiative, he said UNIDO looks forward to further deepening its partnership with China.
Representatives from dozens of countries and think tank scholars took the floor to reflect on the extraordinary 55-year journey. They reaffirmed their commitment to the one-China principle and expressed their readiness to work with China to uphold multilateralism and advance the development of the UN and its work.
During the event, guests also watched historical footage of the 26th session of the UN General Assembly adopting Resolution 2758.
