Heavy rain, thunderstorms and powerful winds are expected across the French Riviera and southern France on Thursday, 5 November, as a Mediterranean weather system brings unsettled conditions to the region.
By Camille Bidard
Météo-France has placed the Var and Alpes-Maritimes departments under yellow weather warnings for heavy rain and possible flooding from 6 am until midnight, with wind gusts potentially reaching 100 km/h in exposed coastal areas.
The Var is expected to experience particularly strong winds, with gusts reaching around 80 km/h along the coast and potentially 100 km/h on exposed headlands.
Elsewhere in the department, gusts of approximately 50 km/h are forecast, accompanied by widespread showers and thunderstorms.
In the Alpes-Maritimes, coastal winds could reach 60 to 65 km/h, particularly around Cannes, while hail is also possible near Guillaumes.
Cloudy skies, rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue throughout the afternoon, with little improvement in conditions.
According to Météo-France, showers developing over the Mediterranean are moving towards the Var, generally weakening as they approach land.
However, heavier rainfall could arrive later in the day, potentially prompting an increase in the warning level.
Several other departments are also under yellow thunderstorm warnings, including Bouches-du-Rhône, Corse-du-Sud, Haute-Corse, Gard and Hérault.
The Gard and Hérault departments have also been upgraded to orange warnings for heavy rain and flooding.
Residents and visitors are advised to remain vigilant, particularly in coastal and flood-prone areas, and to follow the latest updates from Météo-France as conditions develop throughout the day.
