WANA (Oct 20) – Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations has warned the UN secretary-general and the Security Council about renewed threats by the United States and Israel against Iran, including the possible use of a massive conventional bomb and attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure.
In a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the president of the Security Council, Gholamhossein Darzi, Iran’s ambassador and chargé d’affaires to the United Nations, said the threats risk further violations of international law and could have catastrophic humanitarian consequences and undermine regional and international peace and security.
The letter, issued in response to recent statements by US President Donald Trump and Israeli officials, highlighted reports that Washington was considering the possible use of the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), widely known as the “Mother of All Bombs,” against Iran.
According to the letter, US media reported on October 15 that the White House and Pentagon had prepared military options that included the possible use of the weapon. Trump also discussed the bomb in a televised interview that day and threatened further attacks against Iran.
Darzi also cited remarks made on October 18 by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, who reportedly said Israel was prepared to attack Iran again and would target all of the country’s energy facilities in any renewed offensive. Katz described the objective as returning Iran to the “Stone Age.”
The Iranian envoy further referred to statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicating the possibility of another military offensive against Iran. He expressed concern that what he described as the silence and explicit support of some Security Council members had encouraged further threats.
Darzi said threats to use the MOAB against Iran and to destroy its energy infrastructure would constitute serious violations of international law, particularly if civilian infrastructure were deliberately targeted. He warned that such attacks and threats could cause severe and potentially long-lasting humanitarian and environmental damage.
The letter also accused the United States and Israel of repeatedly disregarding their obligations under international law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and customary international humanitarian law.
Iran called on the UN secretary-general and the Security Council to take immediate action, including demanding an end to what Tehran described as unlawful threats, explicitly condemning threats against Iran’s critical civilian infrastructure, and convening an emergency Security Council meeting to address the implications for regional and international peace and security.
The letter also called for accountability and full compensation for damages resulting from what Iran described as internationally wrongful acts committed by the United States and Israel.
“The Security Council cannot remain silent in the face of explicit threats of renewed aggression and the destruction of critical civilian infrastructure,” the letter stated, warning that inaction would further weaken the UN Charter and the international legal order.
Darzi reaffirmed Iran’s inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, saying the country would take all necessary measures to protect its people, sovereignty, territorial integrity and vital national interests against any threat.
He warned that the United States and Israel would bear full responsibility for the consequences of any further aggression, including the risk of an unpredictable and uncontrollable escalation.
The Iranian envoy requested that the letter be circulated as an official document of the UN General Assembly and Security Council.
