The Japanese government has announced an emergency grant of $8 million to help address urgent humanitarian needs arising from the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Yemen and its growing impact on neighboring countries.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Japanese Embassy to Yemen said the funding is aimed at promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, including the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait, a vital maritime route for energy security for Japan and the international community.
According to the statement, the emergency grant will support humanitarian assistance across multiple sectors in Yemen, including food security and healthcare.
The funding will be distributed through several international organizations, with $3 million allocated to the World Food Programme (WFP), $3 million to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and $2 million to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
In addition, Japan has provided $2 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Djibouti to support refugee-related humanitarian efforts in the region.
The Japanese government reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with relevant countries and international organizations to help improve humanitarian conditions and contribute to peace and stability in the Middle East.
Yemen continues to face one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with millions of people in need of assistance amid ongoing conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and economic hardship. Japan has been among the international donors providing humanitarian support to vulnerable populations in Yemen through multilateral organizations.
