WASHINGTON (MNTV) – US Vice President JD Vance has said he remains uncertain about seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2028, leaving open the possibility of not entering the race despite being viewed as a potential successor to President Donald Trump.
Speaking during a CBS News town hall in Michigan, broadcast Saturday night, Vance acknowledged that he could decide against running when asked about his political ambitions by host Tony Dokoupil.
“Of course there’s a chance,” he responded.
Vance said he tends to delay major personal decisions and would need more time to consider a presidential campaign, particularly because of its implications for his family.
He pointed to his four young children and his wife, Usha Vance, who he said enjoys public service but has never been particularly enthusiastic about politics.
Trump has previously identified Vance as his “most likely” successor within the Republican Party, fueling speculation about the vice president’s plans for the next presidential election.
During the discussion, Vance also addressed concerns about the US economy, defending the administration’s record while criticizing former President Joe Biden’s handling of American manufacturing.
He argued that the previous administration had failed to prioritize domestic industrial production and acknowledged that rebuilding the manufacturing sector would require sustained efforts.
On rising gasoline prices, Vance recognized the financial pressure facing Americans and linked elevated fuel costs to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
He expressed confidence that prices would decline once hostilities ended.
Addressing Washington’s military campaign against Tehran, Vance maintained that the US had achieved significant victories but acknowledged that Iran’s actions would influence how the conflict develops.
He said the administration’s central objective was to secure a binding assurance from Tehran that it would not restore its nuclear program.
Vance also dismissed accusations of corruption involving Trump, saying he had seen no evidence that the president personally engaged in or authorized corrupt activities.
The remarks come as attention increasingly turns toward the Republican Party’s leadership after Trump, who is serving his second term as president, leaves office in January 2029.
