By November 25, local jails in New York State will not be allowed to house people for federal civil immigration violations. Along with this, local law enforcement will not be permitted to detain people for those violations either.
This is part of the Local Cops, Local Crimes Act. That was passed by the New York State Legislature and signed by Governor Kathy Hochul.
Governor Hochul and State Attorney General Leitita James announced that their offices sent out letters to county executives and sheriffs across the state, to remind them of this.
In a statement, Governor Hochul said this is to keep local law enforcement focused on their local duties, not federal ones.
