MASON COUNTY, Ky. (WKRC) – Residents of a trailer home neighborhood outside Maysville have 90 days to leave after the land was sold to tech giant Meta for a data center complex.
In October, the Mason County Fiscal Court approved the complex on 2,900 acres outside Maysville, possibly the largest industrial project in Kentucky history.
Meadowland Village sits on the edge of the allotted land. Some residents are elderly or on a fixed income. Jason Giles sits on the Maysville Commission on Human Rights, working with a growing homeless population. Giles says at least ten residents are in serious danger of becoming homeless.
“Obviously, the owner has the right to sell,” Giles said. “But what I and my local commission are going to do is work with these individuals and try to find some way to help.”
Giles says the residents were initially offered just $20,000. The buyout went up to $50,000 after protest, but with a catch.
“These individuals have to move or leave their trailers behind before they can even qualify to get that money,” Giles said. “And most of these folks don't have that kind of money.”
Pastor Gregory Jones lived with his family at Meadowland Village for eight years before the notice came.
Jones says he's blessed to have somewhere to go and has already begun packing, but he says he wishes city or county officials would step in to help his neighbors.
“[The sellers] are getting money to last them a lifetime and to even think about putting a stipulation in there like that,” Jones said. “They should have just given them a check on the closing day. That way they could prepare to move quickly and be out of here before the weather changes.”
Local 12 reached out to Dusty Porter, identified as the seller of Meadowland Village. He told us he was no longer the owner and had no further comment.
“There's not a lot of places to put people,” Giles said. “That's what we're dealing with on a local level all the way through, whether it be a house, a trailer, or a homeless person.”
