ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Atlanta once again finds itself at the center of the global stage.
Following a whirlwind of high-profile political visits from Vice President JD Vance, former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of next week’s midterms, the city will host top international diplomats for the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Friday and Saturday.
The gathering serves as the primary foreign affairs summit leading into December’s G20 Leaders’ Summit in Miami. Hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the meeting brings together senior delegations from member nations — including Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov — to address international security, freedom of navigation, supply chain resilience, and global food and energy concerns.
For Atlanta residents and commuters, the high-security event means motorcades, rolling roadblocks, and extensive street closures centered around Midtown.
According to maps released by the Atlanta Department of Transportation, traffic around the Loews Atlanta Hotel corridor will be significantly restricted through Sunday:

The temporary road closures began Thursday, cameras from the Georgia Department of Transportation show. They will be in place until noon Sunday, according to the Atlanta Department of Transportation.
Drivers are strongly advised to avoid the area, expect rolling delays on surrounding arterial roads, and utilize alternate east-west routes like 10th Street NE or 14th Street NE when traveling through Midtown.
Editor’s note: This story originally stated the closures would begin at midnight Friday. Crews began closing the roads Thursday.
