Established at France’s initiative in February 2023, the Nuclear Alliance brings together European countries seeking to promote nuclear energy as a pillar of the energy transition alongside renewable sources. Belgium, which had been an observer, became a full member of the alliance in February 2025.
“Belgium has chosen to put nuclear energy back at the heart of its energy policy,” said Mr Bihet (MR). “We are pursuing the same ambition at European level: nuclear energy must be fully recognised for its contribution to security of supply, decarbonisation and the competitiveness of our industry.”
The alliance now includes 15 of the 27 Member States. Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, France, Hungary, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden are also members. Greece and Latvia participate as observers.
The platform advocates for a European Union that fully embraces nuclear energy alongside renewables, notably in the post-2030 policy framework that the European Commission is due to present in the coming months. It also emphasises security of supply for medical radioisotopes.
More than twenty years after a vote to phase out nuclear power, prime minister Bart De Wever’s government has once again made an unequivocal choice in favour of nuclear energy. It is currently negotiating with energy group Engie to buy the nuclear power plants. On Tuesday, newspapers De Tijd and L’Echo reported that the government would be prepared to resort to expropriation if the negotiations failed.
