German shipowner Peter Döhle is reported to have expanded its growing container ship orderbook with a new quartet of mid-sized vessels at its preferred CSSC shipyards
Shipbroking and market sources have linked the prominent shipping group to an order for four 3,700-TEU vessels at Chengxi Shipyard, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC).
The shipbuilder disclosed the contract, stating that an unnamed “leading” European shipowner had placed the order, which was signed on 23 October.
Chengxi Shipyard made a notable return to the container ship market last April, when it again partnered with Peter Döhle for an order for two 3,100-TEU vessels.
According to the shipbuilder, the newly contracted vessels will feature a new-generation, highly efficient design incorporating eco-friendly technologies aimed at reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
Peter Döhle’s most recent CSSC order was placed during SMM 2026 in September, when the company signed a contract with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding for two 14,000-TEU vessels.
Peter Döhle managing director Jan Döhle signed that newbuilding contract. Representing the third generation of the family, Mr Döhle highlighted the importance of personal relationships and the strong ties built over the years in his group’s repeated decision to place orders with CSSC. He made the remarks at an event held on the sidelines of SMM.
Peter Döhle has ordered 24 container ships at CSSC yards since 2024, when it launched a large-scale fleet renewal programme.
According to Clarksons data, the group’s orderbook also includes Ultramax bulk carriers.
The company traces its roots back to 1956. In its early years, the company mainly served owners of coaster vessels who needed an agent ashore to pursue their commercial affairs, including chartering, operations and accounting.
In the course of the 1960s, the first container vessels were ordered and added to its fleet.
